About Us
Since 2008, Portsmouth City Council has owned Portico Shipping Limited, leading to a transformative journey. Transitioning from its roots as a primarily fruit-focused business, Portico has evolved into a multi-million cargo handling operation
Governed by a board of six directors, including council, Portico, and elected officials, we’re also supported by a strong independent senior management team. In our diverse workforce, we employ a wide range of staff, including crane drivers, customer account handlers, warehouse and container operatives, quayside staff, as well as professionals in health and safety, HR, and facilities.
In addition to providing two deep water berths and a diverse range of cargo handling services, our experienced team can also facilitate your business’s access to scheduled container services on a standalone basis.
We’re also part of Solent Freeport, which offers a wide range of potential benefits for you and your business.
Facilities
Moreover, our two deep water quays have the capacity to accommodate vessels up to 285m in length. We also have new equipment across the site, including state-of-the-art mobile harbor cranes capable of 250-tonne tandem lifts.
Scheduled container services
Additionally, we can already transport your containers to the Port of Antwerp in Belgium through our weekly AEL service. The journey from Portsmouth to Antwerp takes just 15 hours on average. Furthermore, Antwerp provides multi-modal links, allowing containers to be moved by rail, road, or river.
